How do the computer viruses spread?

Computer viruses are still one of the main security threats in the internet. Viruses which abuse inter-human contacts spread by sending infected messages.

Computer viruses are programs that jump from computer to computer, just as real viruses jump from person to person.

Computer viruses typically enter a computer system through E-mail and file attachments via the Internet and online services, or through illegal or borrowed copies of software.

Viruses have been around computers for a long time. Originally viruses lived in program files that people download using a file transfer program or their web browsers.

Computer viruses not only overwrite the recipient’s computer files but also create a back door so that the virus originator can get onto the recipient’s computer at any time at a later door.

While some viruses use inly infected messages to propagate, many of them can also use other infection mechanisms in order to increase their spreading rate.

Copies of shareware software downloaded from the internet can be another source of viruses.

For example, a Trojan horse program whose purpose is to infect other programs could be planted on a software bulletin board that permits users to upload and download programs.

When user downloads the program and then executes it, the program proceeds to infect other programs in the user’s system.

Thus, as a good practice, avoid using software from questionable sources without checking for viruses.

Also need to use regularly antivirus programs that can help diagnose and remove computer viruses from infected files on hard disk.

Computer Viruses

One of the most destructive examples of computer crime involves the creation of computer viruses or worms. Virus is the more popular term but, technically, a virus is a program code that cannot work without being inserted into another program.

A worm is a distinct program that can run unaided. In either case, these programs copy annoying or destructive routines into the networked computer systems of anyone who accesses computers infected with the virus or who uses copies of disks taken from infected computer.

Thus, a computer virus or worm can spread destruction among many users. Though they sometimes display only humorous messages, they more often destroy the contents of memory, hard disks, and other storage devices. Copy routines in the virus or worms spread the virus and destroy the data and software of many computer users.

Computer viruses typically enter a computer system through E-mail and file attachments via the Internet and online services, or through illegal or borrowed copies of software. Copies of shareware software downloaded from the internet can be another source of viruses.

A virus usually copies itself into the files of a computer’s operating system. Then virus spreads to the main memory and copies itself onto the computer’s hard dick and any inserted disks.

Trojan Problem

The term ‘trojan horse’ is used nowadays to describe something that appears to be a gift, but that actually is a trap. In the computer security, the term has materialized into ‘a program that appears to be cool, but that erases all files’.

A trojan horse is a type of computer program that programs an ostensibly useful function but contains a hidden function that compromises the host system’s security.

Every time trying to open Internet Explorer to surf the Internet, an error message reads "Failed to get data for 'ad' ", the next thing see is a dreaded illegal operation box and Internet Explorer gets shut down.

When navigating around My Computer or Control Panels, this message will appear although still can navigate the controls, despite the illegal message error.

This is an example of a Trojan. Trojans are not viruses; these are malware that are usually hidden in a.exe file that people download online.

Trojan can be pick up by opening an e-mail attachment containing one.

Scripting enables malicious Web sites to plan a Trojan onto the system when visitors visit the site. For example visitor got to hacker web site to download hacker tools or to learn about hacking. While downloading a file, the website may be planting a Trojan onto his system.

These programs also can be installed in a computer when user leaves the computer logged in when unattended.

Those on receiving end of a Trojan are usually tricked into opening them because they appear to be receiving legitimate software or files from a legitimate source.

Sometime after doing a complete system scan and one may assume that the virus checker caught it. About a week later, the symptoms can resurface.
