Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) is one of the leading manufacturers of graphics workstations. The historical development of its graphics system architecture is representative of the development of commercial graphics systems.
SGI was founded by Prof, James Clark in 1981. Clark has been head of a research team at Stanford University that had been sponsored by DARPA to investigate and develop integrated circuit tools to calculate missile trajectories.
Silicon Graphics is probably most famous for the workstations it produced to create special effects for films such as Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump.
The Silicon Graphics GTX is built from four subsystems for geometry processing, scan conversion, raster (pixel) processing, and display output.
