The memory is used for storing information. This information in a computer is either a program (instructions and operands) or control information created by the program.
Each piece of information has an address. When stored information is needed, the microprocessor looks it up at its address in memory.
Memory devices at a lower level are faster to access, smaller in size and more expensive per byte, having a higher bandwidth and using a smaller unit of transfer as compared with those at a higher level.
There are four important parameters that are significant in choosing a computer memory:
*Capacity
*Speed
*Latency
*Bandwidth
The memory consists of multiple memory modules, where each memory module is capable of performing one memory access at a time and contains a subset of the total physical address space.
