Spam, also called unsolicited commercial email or ‘junk email’ aggravates many computer users. Not only can spam be nuisance but its cost may be passed onto consumers through higher charges from internet service providers who must upgrade their system to handle traffic.
Spam refers to many varieties of exploitation, malfeasance and bad behavior and spam terminology has branched out into specific sub-domains, from ‘phishing spam’ and ‘419 spam’ to splogs, linkfarms, floodbots, content farms.
Spam is not force of nature, but the product of particular populations distributed through all the world’s countries. It is mainly used for commercial promotion. Its other uses include: social activism, political campaigning, and distribution of pornographic materials.
