Fingerprint readers

The most widely used biometric device today is a finger print reader. A fingerprint reader, or scanner, captures curves and indentations of a fingerprint.

Organizations use fingerprint readers to secure doors, computers and software. Home and small business users install fingerprint reads to authenticate users before the can access a personal computer.

The reader can be set up to perform different functions for different fingers, for example, one finger starts a program and another finger shuts down the computer.

Image quality specifications for fingerprint scanners have been introduced to certify the scanners for law enforcement and government applications.

A fingerprint reader makes a two-dimension plot of a fingerprint and ‘recognizes’ the fingerprint based on unique characteristics found in the plot.

The two dimensional plot may be an actual image of the fingerprint taken by an image sensor, or a two-dimensional plot of the distances between the fingerprint sensor and the skin on the finger.

These distances vary based on the ridges that make up the fingerprint.
